  • Montgomery County Humane Society  Rockville, Maryland
  • Lost Pets.   Here's a true story with a happy ending. A few years ago someone inadvertently left my fence gate open, and Max and Tatiana got loose without my knowing it. I never leave them alone in the yard for very long, but in the 15 minutes it took me to discover what had happened, they were long gone.

After fruitlessly searching the neighborhood all morning, I went down to the local humane society and reported the two boxers AWOL. It paid off! At 4:30pm I got a call from the woman who took the report. Someone had sighted the two playing in the middle of a nearby highway (dumb dogs - argh). Upon hearing this I flew out the door and drove over to the intersection where they had been spotted.

There, on the shoulder of the road I noticed a sheriff's car, lights aflashing, pulled over along with a couple of other cars. Sure enough, he had my two wet (thanks to a sudden downpour) and frightened pooches sitting in his patrol car, no worse for the wear. Whew! Since both dogs don tags with my name, address, and phone number, no doubt the sheriff would have brought them home without the humane society intervening, but it sure was nice to get that call from them. It was also reassuring to know that had the dogs lost their ID tags, I still would have been notified of the sighting based on the missing dog report I had filed.
